6 Much-Needed Wardrobe Essentials for Women Over 50

By the time most women are 50 or above, they could use a good wardrobe reevaluation. You don’t always have to tear out everything apart and then put together a new wardrobe from scratch but it always helps to make a few changes here and there.

Elderly women nowadays aren’t behind the young ladies anymore. They know their choices and aren’t afraid to mix and match.

Did you know that in the UK, the amount that women over 50 spend on clothing is almost 300 pounds annually? So if you are also looking for some styles that will complement your age, read this guide!

1. Straight-leg jeans

Believe it or not, mid-rise straight-leg jeans are one of the latest fashions for women over 50. You can easily skip the skinny jeans section of the clothing stores because they don’t really look that flattering on most people.

On the other hand, straight-leg jeans that come in dark or navy blue are ideal. Make sure to buy a pair that does not have any fading or whiskering. Pair this with some stylish boots or sneakers and you’ll look like a modern goddess! For the upper portion, you can wear a tunic top or a top with a longer jacket.

2. Monochrome

Sounds boring? Well, it’s quite the opposite of that! When you find a color that looks good on you, stick to it and go overboard. Even if you don’t wish to go overboard with the same color, you can add splashes of it right from your head to your toes.

Not only is this look super easy to pull off but it also works really well with almost any color. You can also make this your go-to outfit for a lunch party with friends or a casual day out.

3. Blazer

No matter what your age is, a great blazer can add just the right amount of sophistication to your wardrobe. This is one area where the fit is extremely important so make sure you choose very carefully and take your time.

You can go for either a single or a double-breasted blazer, depending on your preference, but put more focus on the shoulders and sleeve lengths. Make sure the blazer isn’t too snug around the back because then it will just look wrong when paired with a comfortable blouse or t-shirt.

4. Pencil skirt

A pencil skirt, especially one that comes in black, is versatile and really chic. Wear one that reaches down to your knees, or you can even purchase one slightly shorter or longer. If you pair it with black tights, you will look extremely professional and beautiful.

Make sure the skirt isn’t too tight or uncomfortable and gives a little bit of stretch. This will be important when you sit down on rough surfaces. As for the shoes, you can go with a pair of dark brown or black boots or pumps. Try not to wear flat sandals as they can ruin the look. Go for wedges or mid-heels.

5. Dresses

Dresses can be another amazing addition to your wardrobe. For women over 50, there are three most popular kinds of dresses- wrap dresses, sleeveless sheath dresses, and fit and flare dresses.

Wrap dresses, especially the ones that come in three-quarter sleeves, are perfect for autumn afternoons. Sleeveless sheath dresses can be worn with light cardigans or jackets in any weather.

Fit and flare dresses make you look very cute and are perfect for breezy summers. For a great cocktail night, make sure you have at least one LBD (little black dress) in your wardrobe.

6. White tee

This is a staple for women belonging to any age group. You might have purchased a comfortable white tee many years back but now your body has changed, and probably so have your tastes. What used to fit you earlier might not make you look that great now.

So go out and buy a white cotton t-shirt that can be paired with any trousers or skirts. Take some time out and think carefully about the cut that you would want- a round-neck tee or a V-neck one, and choose carefully.

Over to you…

No matter what you decide to wear, it’s important to feel confident and comfortable in that outfit. Choose clothes that make you feel yourself. Complete your look with a fancy bag, a watch, and some jewelry and you’ll be turning heads in every room!
